Honduras!

I am in Honduras right now and had a fantastic walk the other day with my BRAND NEW Fivefingers -- Komodo!

I am staying near Concepcion de Intibuca, and we walked up a mountain that we call Mount Squiggly (due to the squiggly stick at the top). I decided to wear my new Komodos, and it was the perfect choice. The whole walk was along trails and hopping between large rocks on the pathway. We found 2 great climbing trees, and I had great grip and dexterity in the shoes. Almost like climbing barefoot!

I was excited to get these before I left, and I am glad I did! I also plan to wear them as I walk around some ruins in a few weeks here.

WHoohooo! Warm weather!

Finally!!

Warm weather! Time to bust out the FiveFingers in full force again!

I do have to report that I got the Injinji socks and LOVE them. Since I think I need a half size in the Sprint style, the socks really help fill in the tiny extra space. Also, it just creates a really nice little cushion. I wore them in freezing winter temps and felt really warm (since the ones I got are wool). The funny part was that the bottom of my feet were cold since the rubber sole is so thin! Overall though, I loved the grip that the shoes offered even on the slippery winter sidewalks. Versatility....yet again.

Looking forward to wearing these this summer and maybe exploring some of the newer designs if I can afford it. Have you checked out all the new types? Check out their website. Although I don't use them for running, a lot of the models appeal to me for general wearing.

Summer uses:
  • Traveling in Honduras
  • Weekend camping/trail walks/hiking
  • Traveling in Botswana
  • General frolicking

Kayaking the Jordan, walking in old waterways, etc.

My Vibram FiveFingers got a lot of great use during a two week trip to Israel! I wore them for kayaking in the Jordan River, and unsurprisingly, they were perfect (which makes sense, since they were made for that). They were comfortable, dried quickly, and I liked having them on afterwards -- rather than being soggy in regular shoes OR worried about losing flipflops along the way (as some did).

I also wore them to walk through an old water tunnel in Jerusalem. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezekiah's_Tunnel) This tunnel had water up to the knee for most of the way and up to mid-thigh for some of the way, so these shoes were an obvious choice! The sole gripped well onto the stones on the bottom, so I felt safe in the water, after the water, and walking up a stone hill afterwards. They also dried quickly and were comfortable.

We did a lot of hiking, but I decided not to wear them for that. It was extremely rocky, and I didn't want to fund myself in the middle of a long hike in pain. Overall though, great experiences AGAIN with the Vibram FiveFingers! Such a great purchase!

RunAMuck was SO MUCH FUN!

What else can I say except that the Vibram FiveFingers were CLEARLY the best shoes for this race??? Most people threw their shoes away after this, but I will be throwing mine into the washer! I was comfortable the whole time, and I had no pain or soreness after wearing them for this! They were great on the terrain. The only part that was slightly uncomfortable was walking on a gravel path for some of it -- but I could get used to it. I tried to walk on the side where it was somewhat grassy instead. However, most of the course was muddy trails and obstacles anyway!

I highly recommend races like the RunAMuck! Fabulous day!

And tomorrow, the FiveFingers

I have basically decided to wear my FiveFingers for the RunAMuck Mud and Music Festival tomorrow. I can't wait to get out there on this obstacle course/5K/mud pit madness!

My peroneal tendonitis is gone, but I am still trying not to make it flare up -- so I haven't done any running yet. I have still been biking, walking, weight training, etc. Also, the Philly weather took a dive, so it has been too cold for me to wantto wear them. AHH!

I will have pictures from tomorrow if all goes well, and I will definitely update on how the Vibram FiveFingers did on the course. :)

Come on, Mud!

Peroneal Tendonitis

I learned last week at the doctor that I have irritated my peroneal tendon, which is what I suspected based on the location of the pain. The picture below shows the path of the peroneal tendon. Basically, the lesson here is that I pushed it too far too fast. My muscles and supporting structures needed to adjust to the extra work they were expected to do, and I didn't do it slowly enough. So -- learn from this and don't do it!!!

For the past week or so, I have been taking Advil a few times a day fo rthe inflammation, icing occasionally, and generally being easy on it. It feels pretty much normal now, and I have a follow-up visit on Monday.

The RunAMuck Mud and Music Festival is coming up this Saturday, and I still have some hopes of wearing my FiveFingers -- but I want to be wary also, because I don't want to be halfway through it and be in really bad pain. I will just have to see how I feel this week and make the best decision.

I am back to wearing my Vibram FiveFingers normally, but I haven't tried running again yet. I won't be too disappointed if I can't run in them, since I am not a runner anyway -- as long as I can still use them for walking, trail walks, biking, and anything water related!

Taking a short break

It seems I have some sort of ankle/foot injury that has flared up, so I am taking a break from trying to run. The Vibram FiveFingers are still comfortable for walking, biking, and other activities, but running is a bit too much of an impact right now. This is probably a good time to explain that I have several old foot injuries that could be exacerbated by certain activities, such as running.

When I was a gymnast, I broke my foot, and I have had pain associated with that in the past -- even after healing. I also had heel issues during that time, and I taped both feet/ankles for each practice and iced afterwards (3-4 times per week). Injuries like that were one reason I ended up quitting in the end. Later in high school, I joined the track team for a season -- but quickly had to stop running and become a manager due to these old injuries causing pain. It seems that whatever injuries I had/have do not like the impact of running very much, even though dancing, jumping, walking, hiking, etc. all seem to be just fine.

I am seeing a sports medicine doctor tomorrow to see what they think the problem may be and see how I should handle it based on what exactly is injured in there. It has been getting progressively better over the last few days, so I am hoping that continues. However, I need to avoid this in the future, so I am hoping to find some solutions. I don't think it is muscular, so I am curious to know what else may be causing it (ligaments, tendons, bones....hopefully not.....)

I still do not blame this on the Vibram FiveFingers. I have a health issue that is prone to flaring up, which I know from previous experiences. I still hope to wear these for the 5K Run A Muck Mud and Music Festival in May if I can. If not for the run, I plan to carry them to change into for the mud pits. :)
